On Tuesday, September 11, 2012, in a foreign act of terror, Islamic extremists launched two planned and coordinated separate assaults on the U.S. consulate office in Benghazi, Libya, and on another U.S. facility about a mile away, killing four members of the U.S. Diplomatic Mission, while causing injury to others. The initial attack on the consulate office took the lives of U.S. Ambassador Christopher J. Stevens and information officer Sean Smith. A subsequent attack a mile away claimed the lives of two other Americans after a lengthy fire fight - after requested military assistance and support failed to arrive. The assaults marked the first successful terrorist attack against the United States on an anniversary of the events of September 11, 2001.
